November 2024: Catch Up on New Rochelle’s Latest News and Events!

I’m thrilled to share some recent highlights and updates from across the city.

 

We’re seeing tremendous momentum in transit-oriented development and sustainability initiatives. We also named New Rochelle's City Manager and with the release of the 2025 Draft Budget, November’s Council meetings will provide the perfect opportunity to learn about our priorities for the year ahead.

New Rochelle Draft 2025 Budget Released


Please mark your calendars for the Council meetings on Tuesday, November 12 at 3:45 PM and Tuesday, November 19 at 4:00 PM.

 

During these meetings, staff will present the proposed 2025 budget, and the Council will ask questions. These sessions are an excellent way to stay informed about Council priorities for the coming year.

  • Pix 11: I had a great chat with the Pix 11 morning team about transit-oriented development, the LINC, and New Rochelle’s incredible waterfront access!

     

  • Inside City Hall: Check out the discussion I had with Errol Louis on housing in New Rochelle and how our city is moving forward. 

     

  • Bloomberg City Lab: I was interviewed by Sarah Holder from Bloomberg News and discussed the importance of the LINC. 

     

  • City and State New York: I was honored to be listed in City & State’s Power of Diversity: Latino 100 (#28) and City & State’s inaugural Hudson Valley Power 100 (#21). 

     

  • CUNY TV: LATiNAS I had the honor of participating in an interview this past spring, which aired on CUNY TV's LATiNAS September and October episodes. Grateful for the opportunity to sit alongside inspiring Latina leaders to discuss the diverse pathways to leadership in government.


 
New Rochelle Council Updates

  • City Manager Search: After a thorough nationwide search that started with over 35 candidates and included an inaugural meet and greet of the finalists, the City Council has unanimously selected Wilfredo Melendez, P.E. to serve as New Rochelle’s City Manager.

     

  • Vanguard NRNY: Check out the City’s intentional and proactive approach to activate the first floors of our downtown. A key feature of our plan is the tenant improvement fund.

 

  • Textile Recycling (pick up from your door!): Pickup service is free and couldn’t be easier. Just sign up at www.helpsy.com/newrochelleny, bag up your unwanted clothes, and Helpsy picks up from your front steps on collection day.

     

  • Tree inventory: In the coming months, the City's consultant Arbor Pro will use GPS and arborist expertise to map and collect data on over 20,000 urban street trees in New Rochelle, ultimately creating a comprehensive forest management plan.

     

  • Food Scrap Recycling Plan: Food scraps make up a significant portion of landfill waste, but they are not trash; they are a valuable resource that can be composted. Recycling food scraps captures their nutrients and energy, returning them to the environment. Click the link for more information and locations.

     

  • Stormwater Mitigation Updates: Check out this link for an update from the Department of Public Works on the city’s stormwater mitigation plan.

     

  • Civilian Complaint Review Board: On October 15, the City Council approved the creation of a Civilian Complaint Review Board. Click the link to hear the Council's discussion, and scroll right to read the legislation.

     

  • Pratt Landing:  Take a look at this meeting for an updated rendering of plans for Pratt Landing (waterfront off Boston Post Road)

     

  • Updated Design for Train Station: The newly unveiled design reimagines the Transit Center as a modern, well-connected hub, featuring state-of-the-art technology and equitable design principles to better serve residents and commuters.

     

  • Update re: the LINC: This presentation demonstrates the plans for the LINC to include stormwater mitigation programs and create opportunities for economic development. Groundbreaking is scheduled for the 4th quarter of 2025!

     

  • Electric Vehicle Master Plan: New Rochelle is the first municipality in Westchester to launch a comprehensive master plan aimed at improving accessibility for electric vehicles. Check it out!
